Hypnotherapy for pain management in Stockport · Online across the UK

Living with pain is exhausting in ways other people rarely see.

Long-term pain affects sleep, mood, patience, relationships and the sense of who you are. Tablets and creams can only take you so far through the day or the night. Hypnotherapy may help you change how your mind responds to pain, alongside the medical care you already have.

You do not have to keep explaining how much it hurts for it to be taken seriously here.

“Pain is real. So is the effect your mind has on how you experience it.”

Does any of this sound familiar?

Pain rarely stays in one place.

Long-term pain has a way of reaching into everything else. The tiredness, the worry and the low mood are not separate problems. They are part of it.

01

Sleep is broken

Getting comfortable takes ages, you wake when you move, and the next day starts already behind.

02

Anxiety comes with it

You plan around the pain, dread flare-ups and find yourself bracing for the next bad day before it arrives.

03

Your mood has dropped

Constant pain wears you down. Things you used to enjoy feel out of reach, and it is hard to stay hopeful.

04

It has become “my pain”

After years, pain can become part of how you describe yourself. That relationship matters, and it can be looked at.

05

Medication is not enough

You take what you have been given, but it only takes the edge off, and you would rather not keep increasing it.

06

People do not understand

You look fine. Explaining it again feels pointless, so you stop mentioning it and carry it on your own.

Hypnotherapy is not a replacement for medical diagnosis or treatment. If you have new, worsening or unexplained pain, please speak to your GP first. I will not ask you to stop or change any medication.

A question I often ask

“When did pain first get you the attention you needed?”

Your relationship with pain has a history.

Acute pain is the body’s warning system. It tells us something is wrong, and we would not have survived without it. But long-term pain, the kind that stays after the injury has healed or comes with a condition like fibromyalgia, arthritis, migraines or nerve pain, is different. It stops being useful and starts running the day.

The brain does not process pain in isolation. Thoughts, emotions and memories all shape how strongly a signal is felt. Two people with the same injury can experience it very differently, and the same person can feel it more on a stressful day than a calm one.

Some people notice, looking back, that pain once brought them care or attention they did not get any other way. Others have simply carried it so long that it has become part of their identity. Neither is a fault. Both are worth understanding.

We look at what pain means to you, not only where it hurts.

How hypnotherapy may help

I will not tell you the pain is all in your head.

In person in Stockport and online across the UK, I use Clinical Hypnotherapy and Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT) to help you change how your mind responds to pain signals, reduce the stress and fear that make pain feel worse, and get more rest. There is research supporting hypnosis as part of pain management, and it works alongside your medical care, not instead of it.

We turn the volume down

Hypnosis can help some people reduce how intensely pain is felt. The signal is still there. Your response to it can change.

We ease what surrounds it

Better sleep, less anxiety and lower stress often make pain more manageable in themselves. These are realistic aims.

We look at the story

In our pre-session conversation we talk about your history, your family and how you see your place in the world. It helps me understand where the work needs to begin.

I stay honest

Everybody responds differently. I will not promise a pain-free life or a set number of sessions. I will tell you honestly whether I think I can help.

A clear, unhurried process

What happens if you contact me?

You cannot book yourself straight into a therapy session. We speak first.

  1. 01

    We speak first

A free 20–30 minute telephone conversation gives you space to tell me about your pain, what you have tried and what you would like to change.

  2. 02

    I understand your situation

If we agree to continue, you complete an intake form covering your health, medication and history. I read it before we meet.

  3. 03

    Your session is personal

We explore your relationship with pain, the stress and fear around it, and the beliefs that may be making it feel heavier than it needs to.

  4. 04

    You take support home

Your personalised 21-day recording reinforces what we found. I may also show you simple techniques such as EFT tapping to use between sessions. I normally check in personally within the first few days, again during the following week or two, and once more at around three to four weeks. The timing is flexible and shaped around the individual.

35 years of listening to people who were tired of not being heard.

Why work with me?

I take pain seriously, and I take you seriously.

Over 35 years of working with people in Stockport, I have met many who had spent years being told their pain was managed, or that there was nothing more to be done. What they often needed was somebody to listen properly before doing anything at all.

I talk naturally and I do not rush. You will not be a set of symptoms. You will be somebody who has been carrying something heavy for a long time and would like a bit of it lifted.

I want you to leave feeling heard, not processed.

Client feedback

“I felt relief at the end of the session, feeling refreshed and like a brand new person.”

Stephen prepared me for the hypnotherapy, explained everything, and guided me through looking into problems from the past. Highly recommend him if you need to deal with issues nobody else can help with.

Common questions

Before you decide whether to get in touch…

How does the brain interpret pain?

Pain signals travel along nerve pathways to the brain, where they are processed by the thalamus and passed to the somatosensory cortex, which interprets them as painful sensations. Thoughts, emotions and memories all influence that interpretation. This is why stress, fear and low mood can make the same pain feel worse, and why changing how the mind responds can make a difference.

Can hypnotherapy help with chronic pain?

For some people, yes. There is reasonable evidence that hypnosis can reduce how intensely pain is felt and help with the sleep problems and anxiety that come with it. It does not cure the underlying condition and it does not replace medical treatment. We speak first about whether it appears suitable for you.

Which kinds of pain do you work with?

People contact me about fibromyalgia, arthritis and joint pain, migraines and headaches, muscle aches, nerve pain and other long-term conditions. Whatever the cause, we work with how your mind responds to it, alongside whatever care your GP or specialist provides.

Will I need to stop my medication?

No. I will never ask you to stop or change medication. Any change to medical treatment should only be made with the clinician who prescribed it.

What is EFT tapping?

Emotional Freedom Technique involves tapping on specific points while focusing on a feeling or sensation. Some people find it helps them settle stress or discomfort between sessions. I may show you how to use it if it seems useful for you.

How many sessions will I need?

Everybody is different. Many people find one to three sessions enough. After the first session you listen to your recording for at least 21 days, and we decide together whether another would help. There is no package and no pressure.

Are sessions face-to-face or online?

I offer in-person sessions in Stockport and online sessions across the UK. If travelling is difficult because of your pain, online may be the better option and we can discuss it.

Begin with a conversation

You have probably explained your pain to a lot of people. This time, somebody will listen.

Tell me what living with it has been like. We can talk about what you have tried, what you want to change and whether I may be the right person to help.
