You cannot switch off
The moment your head hits the pillow, the mind starts. Replaying the day, planning tomorrow, worrying about things you cannot change tonight.

Lying awake, watching the clock, calculating how many hours are left. Dreading bedtime because you already know how it will go. Sleep is meant to happen naturally. When it stops, everything else feels harder.
You do not need to have tried everything before asking for help. You only need to be tired of it.

“Trying harder to sleep is often the thing keeping you awake.”
Does any of this sound familiar?
It follows you into the day, into your mood, your patience and your concentration. People often arrive having spent months, sometimes years, trying to fix it on their own.
The moment your head hits the pillow, the mind starts. Replaying the day, planning tomorrow, worrying about things you cannot change tonight.
Three in the morning, wide awake, and the harder you try the more awake you become.
Going to bed has become a test you expect to fail. That expectation alone is enough to keep you awake.
Tired all day, then somehow alert the moment you try to rest. The body has learned to stay on guard.
Apps, teas, routines, no screens, no caffeine. Some of it helped a bit. None of it fixed the underlying pattern.
Mood, concentration, relationships, work. Poor sleep makes every other difficulty harder to carry.
Sleep problems can have physical causes, including sleep apnoea, pain, medication or hormonal changes. If your sleep has been poor for some time, please speak to your GP as well. Hypnotherapy is not a substitute for medical assessment.
A question I often ask
“What do you tell yourself at three in the morning?”
Most people who struggle with sleep can sleep. They fall asleep on the sofa, or in the car as a passenger, or on holiday. What they cannot do is sleep on demand, in their own bed, on a work night, with the pressure on.
That pressure is the problem. Somewhere along the way, bed became associated with effort, frustration and failure rather than rest. The mind learned that night-time is when the worrying happens. The body learned to stay alert. Every bad night confirmed the belief that you are “a bad sleeper”, and the belief made the next night worse.
Hypnotherapy and RTT work with exactly that: the beliefs and associations underneath the pattern, not only the symptoms.
You do not need to be good at relaxing. You need to stop fighting. How hypnotherapy may help
In person in Stockport and online across the UK, I use Clinical Hypnotherapy and Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT) to help you understand where the sleep pattern began, change the beliefs holding it in place and give the mind and body permission to rest again.
Sleep problems often trace back to a period of stress, a loss, a change or a time when staying alert felt necessary. Understanding that loosens its grip.
Bed stops being a place of effort and becomes a place of rest again. That shift happens in the mind first.
Your personalised recording is designed to be listened to at bedtime. Many people find it does the job that counting sheep never could.
Everybody responds differently. Some people notice a difference within days; others need more time. I will not promise a fixed result.
A clear, unhurried process
You cannot book yourself straight into a therapy session. We speak first.
A free 20–30 minute telephone conversation gives you space to tell me about your sleep, what you have tried and how it is affecting you.
If we agree to continue, you complete an intake form covering your sleep history, routines, health and what has been going on in your life.
We explore where the pattern began, the beliefs and worries connected to it, and begin to change them. You stay aware and in control throughout.
Your personalised recording is designed for bedtime. You listen for at least 21 days, and I normally check in personally within the first few days, again during the following week or two, and once more at around three to four weeks. The timing is flexible and shaped around the individual.
Most people find one to three sessions is enough. There is no package to commit to.

35 years of knowing what a bad night does to the next day.Why work with me?
I have had times in my own working life when I would wake at three or four in the morning, already thinking about the day ahead, and know there was no point trying to get back to sleep. It is exhausting in a way that is hard to explain to somebody who sleeps well.
Over 35 years of working with people in Stockport, I have met many who were carrying that exhaustion into work, into their families and into every decision. I talk to people naturally, without judgement, and I take sleep seriously because I know how much it affects everything else.
I want you to feel understood, not lectured.

I went on to have two sessions. My sleep improved to a point where I feel back to my best. Stephen’s practical knowledge of sleep and the mind is phenomenal. I can’t thank him enough.

For many people, yes. Hypnotherapy and RTT work with the thoughts, beliefs and associations that keep the mind alert at night. They do not replace medical assessment, and if there is a physical cause such as sleep apnoea, that needs to be addressed too. We speak first about whether my approach appears suitable.
No. Hypnosis is not sleep. You remain aware, we talk throughout and you remember what happens. Some people feel deeply relaxed, but they are not asleep.
You are asked to listen for at least 21 days. Most people listen at bedtime, which is what the recording is designed for. Many find it becomes the thing that helps them drift off.
Your personalised recording, which you listen to for at least 21 days. I may also send relevant information if it is useful.
Then your GP or specialist needs to be involved. Hypnotherapy may still help with the worry, tension and frustration that come with poor sleep, but it works alongside medical care, not instead of it.
Everybody is different. Many people find one to three sessions enough. After the first session you listen to your recording for at least 21 days, and we decide together whether another would help. There is no package and no pressure.
I offer in-person sessions in Stockport and online sessions across the UK. Most of my RTT sessions take place face-to-face, but we can discuss what feels right for you.
